Why Some Websites Take Longer To Load — And What To Do About It

Here's the truth: slow websites are almost never a mystery. They're slow because of a handful of specific, fixable problems.

Let's go through them one by one — and what to do about each.

1. Your Images Are Too Heavy

This is the #1 reason contractor websites are slow.

You take a photo on your phone. It looks great. You upload it to your website.

But that photo is probably 5 megabytes or more. Your website only needs it to be a few hundred kilobytes.

Every time someone visits your page, their phone has to download that massive file. Multiply that by ten photos, and your site is crawling.

The fix: Compress your images before uploading. Make the file smaller without making the photo look worse. Sqoosh is my favorite.

2. Too Many Plugins and Fancy Features

You wanted a slider on the homepage. A pop-up for a special offer. A social media feed. A live chat widget.

Each one of those features requires code. Every piece of code has to load before your visitor sees anything.

It's like pulling a trailer with a sedan.

Here is something that will confuse you, even if you don't use the 50 elements in your plugin, the javascript still loads, and makes the website slower. Yes lazy loading the javascript does help. But it is not the best fix.

3. Cheap Hosting

You bought the cheapest hosting plan you could find. Makes sense — you didn't want to overpay for something you don't fully understand.

But cheap hosting means you're sharing a server with hundreds of other websites. When one of them gets busy, everyone else slows down.

The fix: Upgrade to better hosting. It costs a little more, but a fast site pays for itself in saved customers.

4. No Caching

Every time someone visits your website, their browser rebuilds the page from scratch. It asks the server for every file, every image, every piece of code.

That's inefficient. And slow.

Caching saves a static version of your site so it loads instantly the next time someone visits.

The fix: Enable caching. If you're on WordPress, plugins like WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache do this automatically. If you're not technical, ask someone who is.

5. Video Backgrounds

A video playing in the background of your homepage looks cool in a demo. But it's one of the fastest ways to kill your load time.

A 10-second video file is hundreds of times heavier than an image. Your visitor's phone has to download that entire video before they can see anything.

The fix: Delete the video background. Replace it with a high-quality photo and a big click-to-call button. Your phone will ring more.

If you really want a video on the website, use youtube, or wistia to host the video, they are very lean.

6. Your Website Has Too Many Different Fonts

This one surprises people.

Every custom font you add to your website is a separate file the visitor's browser has to download. Three different fonts? Three different files. Six different font weights? Six more files.

It adds up fast.

The fix: Stick to one or two fonts maximum. Use system fonts if possible. Your website will look cleaner and load faster.

7. Your Website Doesn't Use a CDN

Here's the problem: your website lives on a server somewhere. Maybe in Arizona. Maybe in Texas. Maybe in another country.

When someone visits your site from across the state, or across the country, the data has to travel a long way. That takes time.

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) stores copies of your website on servers all over the world. When someone visits, they get the copy closest to them. Faster load. Every time.

The fix: Use a CDN like Cloudflare. It's free for basic use and makes a noticeable difference. This one will almost shock you how effective it is to even use the free version of cloudflare, in fact this website uses it, and so does our client's websites.

People Also will suggest minifying the code, but its not a big lever, if you want big difference, you have to revamp your website entirely, most of the time this is the reality.
