Home Services: Focus on Strategy, Not AI Search
Digital Marketing, Home Services Marketing, Local Service SEO
Here is What Home Services Businesses Should do to Optimise for AI Search.
Every week there's a new panic.
"AI is changing search forever."
"Get your business optimized for ChatGPT or you'll be invisible."
"AI SEO is the new SEO."
So let me give you my honest take.
Don't intentionally try to optimize for AI search if you run a home services business.
Not because AI isn't real. Not because it doesn't matter.
But becauseyou can't control it.And every hour you spend chasing it is an hour you didn't spend on the things that actually decide whether you get the job.
Let me explain what I mean — and I'm going to be honest about the parts that don't fit my argument, too.
First, Let's Be Honest About What AI Actually Does
If you ask ChatGPT "what's the best laptop under $1,000?" it will answer confidently. It can compare specs. RAM. Processor. Battery life. Products have published specs. They're standardized. They're comparable.
Services don't work that way.
If you ask "who's the best plumber in Mesa?" — it can't actually know. It doesn't know what each plumber charges. Who's available this week. Who does quality work. Who shows up on time.
So what does it do?
It pulls from the same trust signals Google already uses. Reviews Ratings. Proximity. Categories. Activity level.
A Google employee on the Search and Gemini Partnerships team has described Google Business Profile as the"grounding source" for AI— the thing that tells the AI whether your business is open, what it offers, and what customers can expect.
That's not my opinion. That's Google's own description of how this works.
So when someone tells you "you need to optimize for AI search," what they're actually saying is: optimize your Google Business Profile.
Which you should be doing anyway.
But Here's Where I Have to Be Honest With You
This is where I'd push back on my own argument.
AI isn't just Google Maps. It's already pulling from more sources than that. Reddit threads. Yelp. Angi. Local news articles. Blog posts. YouTube transcripts. And the mix changes depending on which AI you're asking.
Different AI tools lean on different sources. Ask one, and it might favor Yelp. Ask another, and it might lean on the Better Business Bureau or licensing boards. Neither one is "just Google Maps."
And AI doesn't show you the same list Google shows you.
Google Maps shows 10 to 20 businesses. The user scrolls. They compare. Maybe they call three.
AI gives them three to eight names and says "these are the best options."
That's a much narrower gate. Being number seven on Maps is fine — you still get seen. Being absent from a three-name AI answer means you don't exist in that conversation at all.
And AI shapes the pricing conversation before you ever get on the phone.
Ask an AI "how much does a water heater replacement cost in Mesa?" and it will give a range. That range is now in the homeowner's head before they call you. If your price is above it, you're defending instead of selling.
And here's the one that actually should worry you: the zero-click problem.
The whole reason Google Maps works for contractors is that the homeowner has togoto Maps. They see your profile. They see your photos. They call.
AI answers don't require that trip. They get the answer inside the chat. They might never open Maps. They might never see your photos or your reviews at all.
So no — "AI just copies Google Maps" isn't quite right. It's the same signals. But a much narrower gate. And it's changing fast.
And It's Going to Keep Changing
Here's the part nobody selling you an "AI optimization package" will tell you.
In 2027, AI will pull from even more sources than it does today.More review platforms. More community forums. More local publications. More video transcripts. More of everything.
Which means whatever specific tactic someone sells you today to "optimize for AI" will probably be obsolete in eighteen months.
You will never win a race against an algorithm that changes every quarter.
So stop trying.
Here's What You Can Actually Control
You can't control what AI recommends.
You can't control which sources it pulls from next year.
You can't control whether it shows three names or eight.
But here's what you can control.
You can control what happens the moment someone reaches out.
When a lead comes in — a form fill, a missed call, a text — how fast do they hear back? Five minutes? Five hours? Never?
You can control whether you follow up.
Not once. Repeatedly. With value. Until they're ready to buy. Most contractors follow up once and quit. Most jobs close on the third or fourth touch.
You can control whether you ask for the review.
In person, before you leave the job. Same day, with a link. Every single time. Not "when you get a chance."
You can control whether you ask for the referral.
Most contractors never ask. The ones who do get shared. And when someone else talks about your business online, that's a trust signal both Google and AI read.
You can control whether you capture the email and the phone number.
Because a lead you own is worth more than a ranking you rent.
You can control whether your business shows up consistentl. Same name, same number, same address — everywhere on the internet.
That consistency is one of the few things that helps with AI and Google and humans. And it costs you nothing.
The Shift in How You Should Think About This
Stop thinking:"How do I get AI to recommend me?"
Start thinking:"How do I make sure that when someone finds me — however they find me — I don't lose them?"
Because that's the real leak.
Think about the journey from the homeowner's side.
They ask AI. They get three names. They might not even click. They might just note one and call later.
Or they search Google. They see your listing. They check your reviews. They look at your photos. Then they fill out a form or call.
In every version of this, the same thing determines whether you get the job:
Did you respond fast?
Did you follow up?
Did your reviews look fresh?
Did your photos show real work?
Did you make it easy to say yes?
AI doesn't change that. It just changes how they found you.
Why Follow-Up Wins More Than Optimization Ever Will
Here's the math nobody shows you.
Most leads don't close on the first contact. They close weeks later, after life gets in the way, after the problem gets worse, after the spouse finally agrees.
If you only respond once, you lose all of them.
If you follow up consistently — text, email, text again — you stay present until they're ready.
And here's the part that should excite you:
Every follow-up you send, every review you collect, every photo you post, those are the exact signals AI reads when it decides who to recommend.
So you're not choosing between "optimizing for AI" and "doing the fundamentals."
The fundamentals ARE the AI optimization.
Fresh reviews. Fast responses. Real photos. Consistent activity. Those aren't just good business. They're the data AI uses to pick its three names.
You just don't have to call it "AI optimization" to benefit from it.
The Bottom Line
Don't chase AI optimization. You'll never catch it. It changes too fast, it pulls from too many sources, and nobody actually knows what next year's version will reward.
But make sure AI can find you when it looks.
Fresh reviews. Real photos. Fast responses. Consistent information everywhere. Real follow-up.
Those are the things that matter — whether the recommendation comes from Google Maps, from ChatGPT, or from a neighbor who saw your truck down the street.
Do the work that shows up in every version of the algorithm.
That's how you win. No matter what AI does next.
How Inbox Stream Helps
Here's the honest problem.
Most contractors don't follow up. Not because they don't want to. Because they're on a job site. The phone rings and they can't answer. A form fills and they see it three hours later.
And every one of those misses is a lead that went to someone else.
That's the entire reason I built theAutomated Texting Package.

One Last Thing
AI search is real. It's growing. And it will keep changing.
But every version of it — every algorithm update, every new source, every new AI tool — rewards the same thing.
Businesses that respond fast. That collect reviews. That follow up. That exist consistently across the internet.
The fundamentals aren't old news. They're the whole game.
Do them, and you win. No matter what AI does next.
